When you see the TPMS light flashing at startup, it usually points to a fault in the tire pressure monitoring system. It does not prove that a tire is flat, and it does not prove that every tire is safe. Check the actual pressure before relying on the dashboard warning.
If a tire looks low, the steering pulls, or the car starts to vibrate or thump, slow down and stop somewhere safe. A damaged or badly underinflated tire needs attention before the TPMS electronics do.
What a TPMS light flashing pattern means
On many vehicles, a system malfunction appears as a TPMS symbol that flashes for 60 to 90 seconds and then remains illuminated. You may see the TPMS light flashing each time the vehicle starts until the fault is corrected. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes the flashing-then-solid pattern as a possible TPMS malfunction.
A solid light from startup usually carries a different message: one or more tires may be significantly underinflated. The two conditions can overlap. A vehicle can have low pressure and a failed sensor at the same time, so a blinking tire pressure light still calls for a manual pressure check.
Cold weather can create another pattern. Pressure may dip overnight, turn the light on, and then rise as the tires warm. That is more consistent with marginally low pressure than a warning that flashes at every startup. Check rather than guess.
Six safe checks before you keep driving
- Pay attention to the vehicle. Pull over if the steering changes, the car pulls, or you hear repeated thumping. Those symptoms matter more than the dashboard sequence.
- Look at all four tires. Check for an obviously low tire, a bulge, a cut, exposed material, or anything lodged in the tread. Do not drive on visible structural damage.
- Measure the pressure when the tires are cold. NHTSA defines cold tires as tires that have not been driven for at least three hours. Use a dependable gauge and check the spare if the vehicle monitors it.
- Use the vehicle’s pressure specification. Read the Tire and Loading Information label on the driver’s door edge or the owner’s manual. The number on the tire sidewall is a maximum rating, not the normal target for the vehicle.
- Restart the vehicle and watch the sequence. Note whether you see the TPMS light flashing for roughly a minute before it becomes solid. That detail helps separate a pressure warning from a system fault.
- Arrange a scan if the flashing returns. A technician can activate the wheel sensors, compare their reported readings with a manual gauge, and check whether the vehicle recognizes each sensor ID.
Why a TPMS light flashing warning happens
Seeing the TPMS light flashing cannot identify the failed part by itself. These are common areas a technician may need to check.
A sensor battery has stopped transmitting
Direct TPMS sensors are mounted in or near the wheels. Their sealed batteries lose power over time. When the battery dies, the sensor assembly is normally replaced and then programmed or relearned to the vehicle.
A sensor or valve-stem component is damaged
An impact, corrosion, or damage during wheel service can keep a sensor from sending reliable information. The outside of the tire may look normal even when the sensor hardware inside the wheel needs attention.
The vehicle does not recognize a sensor
Some vehicles require a relearn after sensor replacement, wheel replacement, or certain tire rotations. An incompatible sensor can create the same problem even if it physically fits the wheel.
The fault is elsewhere in the system
The wheel sensors are only one part of TPMS. A receiver, antenna, wiring, or control-module problem can prevent the vehicle from processing signals from otherwise working sensors. This is why replacing a sensor without testing can waste money.
Can you drive when the TPMS light flashes then stays on?
Start with the tires, not the electronics. If every tire is properly inflated, there is no visible damage, and the vehicle handles normally, a short and cautious trip to a service location is different from driving on a visibly low tire. The monitoring system may be unreliable during that trip, so continue checking the tires manually.
Stop driving if a tire loses pressure again, looks damaged, or changes the way the vehicle steers or rides. A warning lamp cannot tell you whether a damaged tire will support the vehicle safely.
